Two of St. John's own marry in church

May 25, 2025

Andrew Aubee and Valerie Clark were married at St John’s on Sunday, 25th May. Among the congregation for the Wedding Mass were Andrew’s sons Gabe and Zack, and Valerie’s daughters Madelyn and Cassidy. Mother Pat Hames presided and preached.

It was a joyful occasion: Andrew and Valerie say they “love each other completely and never imagined a better partner”.

Andrew and Valerie have each been married before, but not in church. They wanted this wedding to be different, and saw St John’s as a special place for it. “We hope to bring God into our marriage” said Andrew, and “that with the grace of God we will be joined in mind, body and spirit”.

Mother Pat Celebrates 35 Years as Priest

May 25, 2025

Mother Pat Hames celebrated the 35th anniversary of her ordination to the priesthood on Memorial Day. She marked the day by preaching and presiding at the 9 o’clock Holy Eucharist service at St John’s.

It’s a milestone that coincides with Mother Pat’s tenth year living in Niantic. She had retired to Niantic after twenty years as the rector of St Mark’s, New Britain, serving before that as curate at Trinity, Newtown with the rector, Father Frank Dunn.

East Lyme – St. John's Episcopal Church members first gathered 150 years ago in John McCook’s summer home, on a property now known as McCook’s Point, for Niantic’s first Episcopal services.

The congregation is still gathering and will celebrate their anniversary this Saturday.

"A focal point through all 150 years is community" said Carolyn Miller, a St. John's parish member. "We care for each other, the community, and the world."

Drue Barnwell is the couple's daughter, who was born April 21 in Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London just 28 weeks into Grier's pregnancy.
