Amid restrictions on SNAP payments, a reminder of St John’s Thursday food pantry

The East Lyme Food Pantry is open at St John’s Episcopal Church at 400 Main Street in Niantic every Thursday from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. The Pantry is associated with Shoreline Soup Kitchens and Pantries which helps people who need help with food in towns from East Lyme west to Madison. It provides non-perishable food, fresh vegetables, meat, eggs and bread.
Families need only to prove that they are resident in one of the eligible towns.
During the current interruption to SNAP payments and uncertainty about their future, St John’s parishioners are asked to consider donating food or money to the East Lyme Food Pantry. The Pantry accepts donations every Thursday from 9am to 1pm in the parking lot behind the church. Shoreline Soup Kitchens and Pantries says it has seen a substantial uptick in donations since the limitation to SNAP payments began.

St John’s has shared its building and provided volunteers to Shoreline Soup Kitchens and Pantries, a faith-based organization, since 2013.
Apart from donations of food direct to the Pantry at St John’s, donations of cash can also be made. If checks are made out to Shoreline Soup Kitchens and Pantries, the money goes to all of its pantries jointly, but checks can also be made out to St John’s Episcopal Church, Niantic, with SSKP placed in the memo line to indicate that the donation is intended for the East Lyme Food Pantry.
Gift cards can also be donated to be used to buy food in East Lyme.
More information about donating, volunteering or visiting a food pantry is available on SSKP’s website: www.shorelinesoupkitchens.org
