St John’s men issue a June picnic croquet challenge – and they mean to win!

The Men’s Group has issued a challenge to all-comers – to take them on at croquet. At stake – the coveted St John’s Croquet Champion’s sash.
The tournament – open to any group of parishioners, or outsiders – will take place on June 14th on Roger’s Field. Teams of at least four, and preferably six, are invited to take up the gauntlet. According to resolute Men’s Group members, the game’s apparent gentility belies its ruthless undercurrent, and they will expect, and give, no quarter.

St John’s Men’s Group – they’re back, and this time it’s personal!
The Men’s Group, which has taken on responsibility for organizing the June Picnic, has been considering tactics, and every (legal) means of defeating the opposition. A short practice on St John’s Green gave cause for cautious optimism, as players matched a degree of dexterity with the sort of amoral, grim-faced determination that marks out the successful croquet player.

“We hope other church groups will take up the challenge,” said one anonymous group member. “There’ll be no shame in losing – and one or two of our players are masters of the mallet, and ornaments in the world of croquet.”

All to play for – the much sought-after Sash, and the enviable title “St John’s Croquet Champion”
